ANWAR Approved for Drilling

Yahoo! News - Senate Votes to Open Alaskan Oil Drilling

"Drilling supporters argued that access to the refuge's oil was a matter of national security and that modern drilling technology would protect the region's wildlife."

"National security" is code for "9/11." There is no manner in which the right will not exploit the deaths of thousands of Americans in the name of whoring for big business. It is sickening.

Dick Cheney, the Dr. Evil of this administration, has already stated that energy conservation is a personal moral choice but not a matter of national security. A slight improvement in CAFE standards would save far more oil than we'll ever drill in ANWAR without a single acre of wilderness being destroyed.

On the other hand, we consume 20 million barrels of oil a day. The highest estimates are that 10 billion barrels lie beneath ANWAR. So we will destroy a national treasure in the name of just over a year's worth of oil.

Oil prices will not drop one dime because of this. If there was any danger of that, Bush would not have pushed this. Politics aside, oil prices will be unaffected because the industry, and the OPEC nations, all know that ANWAR holds absolutely no chance of affecting the oil supply in any way.

Just a smoke screen, folks. Just another way to transfer our country's treasure from the many to the few.
