Dim Bulbs

I spent the beginning of my morning listening to co-workers bash John Kerry. The conversation went something like this:

Supremacist (looking at a John Kerry hate site)

Newbie: "Oh, yeah, isn't that guy scary?!"

Supremacist: "Yeah, you should read what this guy has done."

Newbie: "I know, I know! How about the time he intentionally cut his own thumb to get a purple heart?"

Supremacist: "Yep. And he nominated himself for the Bronze Star, but his CO turned him down."

Newbie: "Yeah, and then he cut off his own leg to get sent back home!!"

Supremacist: "Amazing isn't? And the surgery to put his leg back on was paid for by us taxpayers!!"

Okay, so they didn't actually say those last comments. However, I don't doubt they would believe it if they saw it on a religious right website or hate radio.

The fascinating part of all this, to me, is the utter lack of irony they perceive in bashing a Vietnam war hero; while they worship a dyed-in-the-wool, draft-dodging AWOL-er. I gave a half a thought about bringing it up, but I've heard this enough to know that the facts wouldn't slow them down.

It's part of the Republican plan to dominate America:

[a] massive tax cuts for the rich
[b] continued salary explosion for corporate managers
[c] continued salary reduction for line workers and teachers
[d] transfer of public school money to private and religious schools
[e] continued pandering to hate-filled ignorants. CCC members, homophobes, etc.

It's brilliant. The rich get richer (imagine where we'll be from this starting point: the top 1% of the wealthy are worth as much as the bottom 40% of the rest of us,) and the middle class disappears. Just about the time poor Republicans start realizing they're idiots for supporting the transfer of their tax dollars from them to the rich, they get thrown some red meat about illegals, gays, or blacks and women in the workforce.

About the time their kids might grow up having less idiotic views, they will have graduated from a decimated public school system and replace their parents' stupid prejudices with ignorance in general.

All future Democratic leaders will be given the Clinton treatment (see Kerry and Edwards.) With media owners like Rupert Murdoch and the success of Faux News Channel, more and more legitimate news channels will be corrupted into organs of the right (thank you, Michael Powell.)

The Democratic middle class will go out with a wimper, as they usually do. Martin Luther King, Jr. said it best:

First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.
