MacIntel Boxes

Intel predicts wide impact from Apple partnership - Yahoo! News

Well, after watching Steve Jobs address at the WWDC where he announced the switch to Intel processors; I'm slightly less negative about the whole thing.

The article I've linked to, besides being a big Intel PR ad, also gives me some hope that if nothing else, Apple can maintain its status as the only PC manufacturer producing innovative products instead of beige boxes.

It's IBM sold Apple processors it couldn't deliver, after they left Freescale for doing the same thing. Neither company really gives a damn about PCs; FSL is all about embedded and IBM is all about servers.

The most natural fit at that point would seem to be AMD and Apple, both being underdogs and both managing to best competitors massively bigger than themselves (besting defined as making a better product, although both had their share of missteps.)

In the end, I'm guessing Intel has promised Apple the fastest path to serious miniaturization. After the Cube and the Mini, I think Jobs wants to take Apple into the forefront of ubiquitous computing.

"Noting that Apple has taken the lead in pushing technology such as USB, FireWire, and wireless networking, Intel says that type of innovation is what it strives for as well.

“It’s a very good fit,” Mulloy said. “Apple has a track record of being the most innovative PC company, and we think we are very innovative as a semiconductor manufacturer.”"
